As you may know, we have had difficulty with emergency air transport off the Island after Lee County discontinued MedStar, the special medical helicopter that was subsidized by the County. They now have a contract with Air Methods medical transport, however the cost for emergency evacuation off the Island is about $20,000 – and many health insurance policies will not cover that amount, leaving you with a large bill to pay. LifeShield Alliance has partnered with Air Methods to provide access to insurance to help cover emergency transportation costs. We have established a group called Upper Captiva Island to get a slightly reduced rate for insurance coverage. Attached to this email and on our website www.ucca1.com/uccahome/lifeshieldalliance.html are the LifeShield Alliance Brochure and Insurance Application.
Insurance is underwritten by Federal Insurance Company, a member insurer of the Chubb Group of Insurance Companies. The attached application spells out the terms and conditions of the policy.
Since my original email and website posting, LifeShield Alliance has taken off the market the Silver and Gold coverage so that there is now only Basic Benefits of $10,0000 coverage, but still individual and family rates. You may print the PDF Application, fill it out and mail to PO Box 578, Fontana CA 92334, or telephone 855-896-9064 and enroll over the phone.
The rates on the application are correct for our group, but the brochure does not reflect our group discount. However, it is important to notice on the Brochure that your residency (determined by where you file your Federal Income Tax form) will dictate whether or not this LifeShield Alliance insurance is an option for you. Currently they offer membership in the following states: AL, AZ, AR, CA, FL, IL, IN, IA, KY, MO, MS, NE, NM, NC, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, VA, WI, WV, and WY. Florida was added recently and they are working to be approved in other states as well, so check with them.
If you are covered by Medicare Part B, you may want to skip this insurance as the Medicare website states the following:
“Medicare may also pay for emergency ambulance transportation in an airplane or helicopter if your health condition requires immediate and rapid ambulance transportation that ground transportation can’t provide, and one of these applies:
Your pickup location can’t be easily reached by ground transportation.
There is still the 20% not covered by Medicare so you may want to check with your Supplemental Health Insurance to be sure they will cover the remainder. If not, LifeShield Alliance membership could fill that gap.
If your residency is not in one of the states covered by LifeShield Alliance and you are not covered by Medicare Part B, still another option is OMNIAdvantage, but it only covers medical transport by Air Methods, which would normally be the responding service; but if they are unable to come, a neighboring county could be called in. More information at Air Methods’ website: www.airmethods.com/omniadvantage#.VEnJHCJ4pAc.
If you choose to join LifeShield Alliance, their medical transport insurance can be used in any of the fifty states with any air ambulance service. The only limitation is you have to have legal residency in one of the approved states listed to qualify for enrollment. If you have questions you may call LifeShield Alliance at 855-896-9064.
We hope this information is useful and that this insurance can give you some peace of mind while you are on Upper Captiva Island – or anywhere in the country.
